Traveller communicating with locals using phrase book

Overcoming Language Barriers During Your Travels

June 22, 2017

Many more people are exploring countries that speak little of the English language. Language can become a massive barrier during your travels but can sometimes be avoided if you plan ahead.

It is nice to hope that most people know enough about the English language for you to get by with everyday questions; however, this is not always the case. The best way to overcome this hurdle is by using a language card – these can be found in a small pocket-size book. The book has simple pictures and small words that you can point at to try and get someone to understand your needs.

Technology has also made great strides in helping travellers communicate. Translation apps on your smartphone can be incredibly useful for translating signs, menus, and having basic conversations.

Learning a few basic phrases in the local language before you travel is always appreciated by locals and can go a long way. Even simple greetings and polite words like "please" and "thank you" can make a real difference to your experience.
